The Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has won the 2020 Presidential election, beating former President, John Dramani Mahama, Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) with 6,730,413 representing 51.595%.
Mr. Mahama on the other hand polled 6,214,889 representing 47.366% of the total valid votes cast.
The Total number of valid votes cast in the 2020 elections is 13,434,574 representing 79% of the total registered voters.
A presidential candidate in Ghana’s Presidential election needs 50 + 1 percentage points of the total valid votes cast to be declared winner, according to laws of the country’s Electoral Commission.
Delay in declaration
The commission failed on its promise to announce results 24 hours after the polls.
The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission Jean Mensa says rains and other challenges on election day affected the timeline set for results declaration.
The two candidates squared off in a Presidential race for the first time in 2012, which was won by John Mahama.
However, 2016 was a big opportunity for Nana Akufo-Addo, to take John Mahama down in the general elections.
Meanwhile, it’s game over, and essentially the last time the two will meet each other in an election, as the President-elect will be ineligible to contest in another election, having served two terms.
In all, 12 presidential candidates contested in the 2020 polls.
The results announced were:
