According to the universal calendar, JULY is the seventh month of the year and for that matter, a unique one among the other eleven months.
The month of July is also the most important month to the history of Ghana, a fact that can not be disputed whatsoever.
Let us look at just seven (7) the most important reasons why Ghanaians hold the month of July in high esteem.
See the reasons below as briefly explained by Political Activist, Frederick Noamesi.
1. 1st July – Republic Day
One of the reasons why July is important to the history of Ghana is because July 1, is a republic day in Ghana. Every July 1 is Republic Day to commemorate the establishment of Ghana as an independent republic in 1960.
2. 1st July – Given As Date Of Birth
Another important reason is that July 1 has been approved as a date of birth to Ghanaians who do not know their birth dates. What this means is that there are people who do not know or remember their date of birth, so July 1 has been selected to be their dates of birth because of the Republic Day in Ghana. This mostly applies to national events like;
Registering for the National Health Insurance Scheme,
Voters’ Register Card
National Identification Card (Ghana Card)
3. 8th July – President Akufo-Addo Called To Bar As Lawyer
Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was professionally called to the English Bar (Middle Temple) in July 1971 as a Lawyer. However, the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) also called him to the Ghanaian Bar on July 8, 1975. President Akufo-Addo is a professional and trained Lawyer by profession.
4. 10th July – Rapper Sarkodie Was Born
Ghana’s biggest music export, Michael Owusu Addo, known professionally as Sarkodie was born on July 10, 1985. Ghanaians especially the youth who love music hold Sarkodie in high esteem for his unprecedented contribution to the development of modern music in Ghana. He has won many national and international music awards including BET Awards.
5. 21st July – Late President John Evans Fiifi Atta-Mills Was Born
The late President Evans Fiifi Atta-Mills was born on 21 July 1944. This is equally an important reason why July is an important month to the history of Ghana.
6. 24th July – Sitting President John Evans Atta Mills Died
Sadly, it was on July 24, 2012, that sitting President Evans Fiifi Atta Mills passed on to glory at the 37 Military Hospital, Accra. Ghanaians will also remember this day and commemorate it accordingly.
