Joe Biden appoints first gay cabinet minister

President of the United States of America, Joe Biden has become the first US President to appoint an openly gay person into his cabinet.

Mr Biden has appointed Pete Buttigieg as Secretary of the Department of Transportation pending confirmation by the US Senate.

If confirmed, Buttigieg will become the first openly LGBTQ, Senate-confirmed person to lead a department and hold a Cabinet-level position.

President Biden is not new to making pioneer appointments, having been the first to present a female vice president in America’s history.

In early 2019, Pete Buttigieg was the first openly gay candidate to run for a Democratic presidential nomination, where he became the first openly LGBTQ person of any party to earn a delegate and win a state caucus or primary.
